TORN BETWEEN THE TWO SCHOOLS
OF VISUAL COMMUNICATION,
ART AND DESIGN
My name is Julio Velela, and I’ve lived in the Northwest for the majority of my life. I began my pursuit to be a designer initially through fine arts such as painting and drawing. Found my first inspiration as a teenager reading magazines such as Juxtapoz Magazine and Hi-Fructose Magazine. I was inspired by all the artists, illustrators, and designers featured on the pages and by reading about their creative processes and roads to success.
With my work, I have always strived to achieve a harmony between my two passions, art, and design. I find it a blessing to have a background in both. One stands with a loose structure while the other maintains rigidness, establishing a contrast with their visual approaches. The fusion of the two provides the potential to develop art and designs that are unique and incorporate elements of both. Sometimes I’m torn between claiming the title of an artist or designer which is why I have come to terms that it will be a never-ending battle.
